MATTESON, ILLINOIS – Rich Township High School District 227 welcomes the newest class of students with their first ever Freshmen Induction Ceremony. Thursday evening’s event included over 200 freshmen students and their families in the gymnasium of the Fine Arts and Communication campus.
"The purpose of the Freshmen Induction Ceremony was to celebrate the very important milestone of students entering high school,” said Rich Township High School Freshmen and Sophomore Academy Lead Dr. LaTonya Applewhite. “This is the step right before students begin to make major life decisions.”
While many of the upcoming freshmen class spent their last year of middle school learning remotely, District 227 staff hoped this event would be a positive experience and show their excitement to have new students in their buildings.
“When considering the recent crisis of the pandemic and how everyone has had to socially distance, being able to come together and commemorate this moment was quite a special occasion,” said Superintendent Dr. Johnnie Thomas. “We want to provide experiences that support students socially, emotionally, and academically as we are always maintaining a focus on our students and their success."
The ceremony included a presentation of pins, candle lighting and special guest speaker, Mr. Trey White, radio host of WGCI. District 227 hopes to carry on this tradition and increase event attendance in the years to come.
